Medical & Physiotherapy Law and Ethics is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the ethical principles, legal responsibilities, professional standards, and regulatory frameworks governing healthcare and physiotherapy practice. The course emphasizes the development of professional conduct, ethical reasoning, patient-centered care, and accountability in clinical practice.
Students will learn the fundamental principles of medical and physiotherapy ethics, including autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, justice, confidentiality, informed consent, truthfulness, and respect for patient dignity. The course also introduces the code of conduct and professional responsibilities established by relevant professional and regulatory bodies.
The legal component covers important aspects of medical and physiotherapy law, including professional negligence, malpractice, liability, documentation and medical records, informed consent, professional indemnity, patient rights, confidentiality, scope of practice, and medico-legal responsibilities. Students will also explore the legal and ethical implications of clinical decision-making and professional relationships.
Special emphasis is placed on ethical decision-making in challenging clinical situations, including end-of-life care, euthanasia, organ transplantation, patient autonomy, ethical dilemmas, and interdisciplinary healthcare practice. The course also highlights strategies for preventing malpractice and maintaining appropriate professional standards.
By the end of the course, students are expected to demonstrate ethical awareness, legal responsibility, professional accountability, effective communication, and sound decision-making skills necessary for safe, competent, and patient-centered physiotherapy practice.
